The City Hunt

*Updated 10/25/25
The Fargo Wildlife Management Program (WMP) is an antlerless only urban archery hunt approved by the City of Fargo and the Fargo Park District to allow archery hunting in the city of Fargo to keep the urban whitetail deer population in balance.

Urban archery hunts are the most cost-effective method of keeping an urban whitetail population in check. The Fargo WMP is a win-win for the community through harvesting deer and applying hunting pressure. This helps keep the population of whitetail deer within the city of Fargo from becoming a nuisance, while offering public land hunting opportunities for area hunters.

Since 2022 the program has been administered by the Sandhills Archery Club. Below are the additional requirements of the program to consider before signing up.

Requirements:
To be eligible to hunt, participants must:

- Attend a training session and pass a written examination.
- Pass a shooting proficiency test
- Be legally eligible to hunt in North Dakota (obtain North Dakota Archery license)
- Purchase (up to 3) Herd Reduction tag(s) from ND Game & Fish

Additional requirements while hunting, all participants must:

- Label their arrow shafts with their last name and City License #
- Label their stand with the tags obtained at the training session
- Hunt from an elevated position, not less than 10ft from the footrest
- Use lighted nocks on their arrows
- Adhere to the required distances from structures, playgrounds, and property lines covered in
the training materials
- Use good judgment and care while interacting with the public using the shared public property

Check this page periodically as we will provide key information about the program here, including when and how to sign-up, results of the previous year’s hunt, and any changes made to the program.
